Paul Stevenson, consultant in Distributed Acoustic Sensing for Blackstar Fiber (an Epic Midstream Company), has over 30 years’ experience in the oil and gas industry both on and offshore, upstream, midstream, and downstream. Throughout his career, Paul has been extensively involved with asset integrity management.
Paul’s past experience has been with integrity management and regulatory compliance with Noble Denton, KBR and Lloyd’s Register.
In 1984, Paul studied Electrical & Electronic Engineering at University of the West of Scotland, and much later in 2007 received a 3-year Professorship in applied structural dynamics from Harbin Engineering University.
Epic Midstream owns and operates through Blackstar Fiber, the longest fiber optic pipeline Leak and ROW intrusion detection system in the Americas, with nearly 1,800 miles.
In October 2019, Paul gave a presentation to SAPA to introducing pipeline leak and ROW intrusion detection using a single unused fiber Optic strand running along the length of the Pipeline.
This month’s topic will cover a brief recap of the October 2019 presentation, followed by an overview of the pains experienced with the system by operators and what efforts Blackstar / EPIC have taken to mitigate them.
